“It’s through mistakes that you actually can grow. You have to get bad in order to get good.” –Paula Scher

My brain can fixate on something for extended periods of time. A problem can become all consuming and require significant mental processing. For this reason, finding a solution can feel so rewarding. I am often limited by the tools and time that I have, but I hope to better design and develop the ideas I come up with in the future.

3d printed temple

I have a terrible habit of taking my glasses off by grabbing and pulling from one side which puts added pressure on the opposite hinge. Luckily, I have several, but I did break the ones I use most often when around the house. I decided this would serve as a problem that could be solved by my 3D printer. I am still learning the ins and outs of successful designs and printing techniques, but I figured it was worth attempting. I pulled out my iPad and began working on a design within Shapr3d. It took me a couple of attempts, but I was able to design something I figured would work. I exported the file, loaded it up onto my printer and let it go to work. Forty-five minutes later I had a newly printed temple that surprisingly works well. The piece is not an exact match for the original, but it does fit well and I don’t feel a difference while wearing them. Granted, they don’t look great, but they continue to work. I was reminded of older movies that depicted nerds with a big line of tape holding the bridge of their glasses together. Now, that 3D printers are more common might my glasses be the new depiction of nerds? I am not sure I am ready to start such a trend -thank goodness for contacts.
